Varsity 2010-11 Scoring

The Varsity Standard of Scoring is used at most Varsity events and the International All Levels Championship. Some Varsity Brands do not use the Varsity Standard of Scoring with All Star Challenge being the notable exception. Some Brands use Category judging (Athletic Championships & WSF) and others use Panel judging (NCA & Spirit Sports).

Advice for Varsity

The consensus is you need a balanced routine to win on the Varsity Standard of Scoring. Things to know about Varsity:

  • Difficulty and Technique are scored separately so be careful when sacrificing one for the other. This cannot be emphasized enough.
  • Quantity and Variety are what will move your difficulty up within your range.
  • Do more than the standard set of group baskets. Look at your opening and running tumbling section to see if baskets can be added.
  • Deductions aren’t bad, so get back into missed stunt and pyramid sequences.
  • Specialty Kick Doubles are needed to get in the highest toss range in Level 5.
  • Unassisted Stunts are rewarded. Do them if you can.

Scoring in the Range

The Varsity Grid says 50% +1 is needed to get in the range and states the skills necessary to get in the correct range, meaning get an x.0 or x.1. Quantity and Variety are what will increase your difficulty score within the range.

  • Stunts – Quantity and Variety are needed. Don’t just do one of the things listed below and expect to score high within your range, do all of them.
    • Level 3 – A Full Twist from Two Leg Stunt is Required.
    • Level 4 – A Single Twist from One Leg Stunt or Double Twist from Two Leg Stunt is Required.
    • Level 5 – A Double Twist from One Leg Stunt is Required.
  • Pyramids – Level appropriate building skills and release moves are required.
  • Tosses – Varsity Scores Dismounts in place of Tosses in Level 1 since Tosses are not allowed per USASF rules. 50% + 1 for tosses is based on 5 person toss groups so to get to the highest range a team of 20 only needs 3 tosses and a team of 36 only needs 4.
    • Level 1 – Dismounts are scored in place of tosses.
    • Level 5 – Specialty Kick Doubles (Hitch Kick Double, Kick Kick Double)
  • Standing & Running Tumbling – Level appropriate tumbling skills and passes.
  • Jumps
    • Level 1 – Basic Jumps or Single Jumps
    • Levels 2-6 – Advanced Jump Combinations

Point Deduction

Varsity Deductions aren’t that severe. Scoring Judges are instructed to ignore items the Deduction Judge takes so teams aren’t double deducted. Varsity also limits single stunt group and pyramid disasters to a 2.0 deduction.

  • Stunt Deductions
    • 0.5 – Stunts and Pyramids that almost drop/fall, but are saved, Incomplete twisting cradles, Memory mistakes involving obvious execution of incorrect moves, Knee or hand touching ground during cradle or dismount, Severe balance checks, Severe timing issues
    • 1.0 – Drops from individual stunt to a cradle, Drops from individual stunt to a pop down dismount
    • 1.5 – Fall from individual stunt to the ground (Top person lands on ground or multiple bases land on ground)
    • 2.0 – Pyramid Collapses, Dropping a Stunt Multiple Times in the Same Sequence
  • Tumbling Deductions
    • 0.5 – Hands Down on Tumbling, Knees touch ground in back handspring
    • 1.0 – Drops to the floor during tumbling
  • Legality Deductions
    • 2.0 – Rules Violations
