Cheersport 2011 Nationals Scoring

Advice for Cheersport

The consensus is you must hit clean to win at Cheersport. That’s worth saying again. You must hit Clean to win at Cheersport (and the most difficult team that hits will win). Things to know about Cheersport:

  • You must connect Jumps to level appropriate Tumbling. At some levels this means it will be jump – pause – tumbling, but you must do it.
  • Deductions are severe. If you miss a stunt, don’t put it back up. Since Cheersport will deduct for every mistake in a stunt sequence without a cap on the number of points they will take, it’s usually not worth going back up and risking dropping again.
  • Don’t perform anything that isn’t level appropriate unless it is perfect. Since you don’t really get points for anything that isn’t level appropriate there is little reason to risk a deduction.
  • Don’t keep any tumbling pass that won’t be completed. Since Cheersport deducts for omissions, an example being a level 5 tumbling pass ended in a back handspring, you don’t want to keep the “iffy” tumbling passes in.

Scoring in the Highest Range

Scoring in the highest range requires the equivalent of at least two-thirds of the team to perform level appropriate skills.

  • Jumps – Connect jumps and jumps to level appropriate tumbling are required. Jumps to tumbling may include a pause in levels in which the rules do not allow jumps to be directly connected level appropriate tumbling.
  • Standing Tumbling – Cheersport used to count skills, not passes, meaning a Back Handspring Full Full wound count as 3 in Level 5.
  • Running Tumbling – Cheersport used to count skills, not passes, meaning a Round-Off Back Handspring Layout Back Handspring Layout would count as 2 in Level 4.
  • Tosses – Level appropriate tosses for Levels 2 and up.
  • Pyramids – Level appropriate pyramid elements and transistions must be performed.
  • Stunts – Level appropriate stunt elements and dismounts must be performed.

Point Deduction

Cheersport deducts for omissions (incomplete tumbling passes or not pulling a body position) and allows judges to double deduct, meaning a dropped stunt will impact your stunt score in addition to the standard deduction for dropping the stunt. Cheersport doesn’t cap how many deductions a single stunt can receive so it may be best to stay on the ground if a stunt drops.

  • Stunt Deductions
    • 2 Points – Balance Checks, Omitted Body Positions, Walking
    • 5 Points – A Caught or Controlled Fall, 1 Base Touching the Ground
    • 6 Points – Top Person Hitting the Ground, Multiple Bases Hitting the Ground
  • Tumbling Deductions
    • 1 Point – Step, Omission
    • 3 Points – Landing on Hands, Knees, or Seat
    • 4 Points – Crashing & Burning
